Algund: Starting Point with Far-Reaching Views
The entry point to the Merano High Mountain Trail from Algund is particularly appealing. Take the chairlift from the district of Mitterplars to Vellau and continue with the gondola basket lift to Leiteralm hut. This way, the hiking experience begins with a touch of nostalgia and unforgettable views over the Merano region. From there, varied stages lead through larch forests, past traditional farmhouses, alpine pastures, and high-alpine passages.
"The Merano High Mountain Trail is a symbol of gentle tourism, scenic diversity, and the connection between the places around the Texel Group," explains Michael Schwellensattl, President of the Algund Tourist Office. "With our participation in the anniversary activities, we want to show how valuable such trails are for sustainable travel."
Event Highlight on June 30th
The central celebration for the 40th anniversary will take place on the morning of June 30, 2025, at the Gasthof Hochmut, which calls itself a "panoramic lodge" due to its unique view. Journalists, representatives of the Texel Group Nature Park, the local Forest Office, alpine clubs, hiking guides, and guests of honor from politics and tourism are invited.
Nature Conservation, Visitor Management, and New Impulses
Parallel to the celebrations, intensive work is underway on the further development of the High Mountain Trail. This includes new safety measures, visitor counts, improved infrastructure, and the goal of making hiking even more in harmony with nature and the region. Topics such as mobility are also in focus: accessibility of the Pfossental valley with public shuttles, improved signposting, and sustainable awareness for visitors.
The Merano garden village of Algund is proud to be part of this network. It invites locals and guests to take the anniversary as an opportunity to consciously embark on the journey again, in the truest sense of the word.
