Via Claudia Augusta

The ancient Roman road through Algund

This cycle path, which crosses Algund near Merano, follows the ancient Roman road that already 2000 years ago connected Augsburg with Venice.

The Via Claudia Augusta is an ancient Roman road that leads from Donauwörth, across the Alps, to the Adriatic Sea. The road was completed in 47 AD under Emperor Claudius from Altinum. However, his father, General Drusus the Elder, had already begun construction around 15 BC. Work on the road thus lasted for over 60 years. Today, the Via Claudia Augusta is primarily known and very popular as a cycle path.

A piece of history in Algund

A bike tour on the Via Claudia Augusta, starting in Donauwörth and ending in Venice or Ostiglia, is just over 700 km long, and the quality of the path varies greatly depending on the area and country. There are sections suitable for family cycling as well as more challenging sections that are classified as mountain bike trails.

In South Tyrol, the Via Claudia Augusta runs from the Reschen Pass through the Vinschgau valley to the garden village of Algund, then continues to the spa town of Merano, through the Adige valley to Bolzano, and finally through the Unterland region to the Salurner Klause. The route is extremely varied in terms of scenery, winding through meadows and forests, around lakes, and past castles and palaces. In Rabland in the Vinschgau valley, the only original milestone of the Via Claudia Augusta found so far was discovered. Today it is exhibited in the Bolzano City Museum, while a replica can be found in Rabland.

Long-distance cycle path through South Tyrol

The garden village of Algund is particularly suitable for anyone planning a bike tour on the Via Claudia Augusta. As long-distance cyclists, a stopover on the Via Claudia Augusta in Algund is worthwhile. The accommodations near the cycle path are picturesquely situated in green surroundings and provide you with everything you need as cyclists. But even if you only want to conquer a part of the Via Claudia Augusta by bike during your active vacation in Algund near Merano, a stay in the garden village is interesting: you can cycle the Via Claudia Augusta towards the Reschen Pass as well as towards Merano or Bolzano in the form of a day trip.

A special attraction in Algund is also the Brückenkopf Museum: where the Via Claudia Augusta once crossed the Adige River, a bridge already existed in Roman times, which had to be rebuilt repeatedly due to floods. Today, you can still visit the old bridgehead, while a newer wooden bridge for cyclists and pedestrians now connects the two banks of the Adige.
