Flowering meadows for Algund

Flowering meadows for Algund

Together for more beneficial insects and a beautiful village

On April 3rd, an insightful field inspection took place in Töll regarding "Sowing to promote beneficial insects in fruit growing." In cooperation with Bioland South Tyrol, a new, species-rich seed mix was presented, specifically designed to support beneficial insects in orchards and vineyards. These mixtures consist of over 30 different plant species and show their full potential by the second year – with first promising results already visible.

Two seed mixes – two paths to floral splendor

A new project is now starting in Algund:
  • Bioland flower meadow seeds will be sown in public areas along the Waalweg trail, the cycle path, and in the village center – visible to both guests and locals.
  • Biasion seeds will be provided to interested farmers to create flower strips between their fruit trees and vines.

Sowing takes place in April. Many of the plants are perennial, so a little patience is required: the full bloom often unfolds only in the second year – but then remains permanent and highly effective.

Flowers that help – for nature, people, and animals

Flowering areas are more than just a pretty sight. They promote:
  • Pollinators and beneficial insects such as parasitic wasps, lacewings, or ladybugs – natural counterparts to pests.
  • Soil structure, humus formation, and biodiversity.
  • A vibrant, welcoming village appearance for visitors and residents.

During the field inspection, it was emphasized, among other things, how important it is to rely on perennial, site-adapted mixtures and to carefully choose mowing times so as not to hinder flower development. Particularly encouraging: even existing areas are showing an increase in wild bee activity and an improved balance in the ecosystem.

Success through cooperation – with heart and commitment
Following Dale Carnegie's motto, "To help yourself, help others," this project thrives on the collaboration between the Algund Tourism Association, the municipality, farmers, and the community. The Tourist Office not only takes the initiative but also covers the cost of the seeds. In turn, the farmers implement the flowering strips on their own land, supported by professional advice and high-quality seeds.
