Interacting with grazing animals

Staying safe on Algund’s alpine huts

While hiking on the alpine pastures around Algund, you may encounter calm grazing animals that have lived peacefully in these meadows for generations. With respectful and mindful behaviour, you help preserve this special connection between humans and nature making your mountain experience safe and unforgettable.

How to avoid conflicts with grazing animals

  • Stay on the trail: Do not leave marked paths. If an animal blocks your way, give it space and walk around calmly.
  • Keep your distance: Give animals plenty of room. Do not pet or feed them.
  • Stay calm: Cows have limited vision and are easily startled. Make yourself known early and act calmly.
  • Caution with mothers and calves: Never get between a cow and its calf or approach young animals.
  • Keep dogs on a leash: Grazing animals may feel threatened by dogs. Always keep your dog on a leash.

How animals signal that you're too close

  • The animal stares at you: it perceives you as a possible threat.
  • If it lowers its head and faces you: it may be preparing to charge.
  • If it starts moving toward you: it's time to retreat calmly.

What to do in case of an attack

  • Move away slowly and calmly. Do not turn your back on the animal.
  • Let go of your dog – it can escape on its own.
  • If necessary, scare the animal off by shouting confidently or waving a stick.
