The Algund Waalweg canal trail

The Algund Waalweg canal trail

Between flowing water and wide views – hiking one of South Tyrol’s most beautiful Waalweg paths

The sound of running water, warm sunshine, and sweeping views – the Algunder Waalweg is a true natural gem in the region of Merano. This historic irrigation path runs almost flat along a gently murmuring channel, passing vineyards, apple orchards, and light mixed forests. Time and again, it opens up views of the garden village of Algund, the spa town of Merano, and the surrounding mountains.

As one of South Tyrol’s most scenic Waalweg trails, the Algund Waalweg is perfect for leisure hikers, families with children, or anyone seeking a relaxing and refreshing walk.

On foot from Algund to Merano

The roughly two-hour hike starts at the Töllgraben Bridge in the Plars district and ends in Merano’s Gratsch neighborhood. If you like, you can continue from there along the famous Tappeiner Promenade trail all the way into the center of Merano. With only gentle ascents and minimal uneven terrain, the Algund Waalweg canal trail is suitable even for inexperienced hikers or a relaxed afternoon stroll. Benches and viewpoints along the way invite you to pause and take in the beauty.

Pleasure along the path

Hiking makes you hungry – and culinary delights are never far away here. Along or just off the trail, you’ll find traditional inns, elegant restaurants with panoramic views and rustic taverns serving South Tyrolean specialties. Our restaurant guide lists the best places to stop and enjoy.

Staying overnight along the Waalweg

Imagine waking up to mountain views and starting your hike straight from your hotel door. In Algund, you’ll find a variety of accommodations located directly on or near the Waalweg: from family-run B&Bs to wellness hotels with sky terraces and infinity pools – there’s something for everyone. Our accommodation overview helps you find the perfect stay for your hiking holiday.

Historic trails, rediscovered

The Waal paths have a long history: they were originally built to irrigate fields. Meltwater and spring water from the mountains was diverted through small channels – the "Waale" – to reach vineyards and orchards. Alongside these channels walked the “Waaler” – men who monitored and regulated the flow of water. Today, these ancient paths are carefully maintained hiking trails that uniquely combine tradition and nature.

Tip: The Waalweg is at its most beautiful in spring during the blossom season or in the golden light of autumn – when the sun filters through the vines and the garden village truly lives up to its name.
