The alpine pastures in summer

Texel Group Nature Park

Experience nature in South Tyrol’s largest nature park

Majestic peaks, crystal-clear lakes, thundering waterfalls and a fascinating variety of flora and fauna: the Texel Group Nature Park is where South Tyrol's beauty truly comes to life. Covering an area of more than 33,000 hectares, it is the largest of the region’s seven nature parks – and one of the most spectacular hiking and nature destinations near the holiday region of Algund.

The park stretches from the Schnalstal Valley in the west across the Passeier Valley to the main Alpine ridge in the north – featuring an impressive elevation range: from around 300 to over 3,000 metres above sea level. This creates a unique blend of alpine, sub-Mediterranean and high-mountain habitats, making the park a fascinating destination for hikers, families, photographers and those seeking peace – all year round.

The Spronser Lakes – a natural wonder at over 2.000 m

A true highlight of the park is the Spronser Lakes, the largest high-alpine lake district in South Tyrol. Ten crystal-clear mountain lakes lie nestled in untouched nature, reflecting the deep blue sky. Popular with experienced hikers, the area also invites visitors to enjoy peaceful moments of wonder and reflection.

Unique wildlife and vegetation

Thanks to its varied climate zones, the nature park is home to an extraordinary range of plant and animal species. Particularly notable are warmth-loving species such as the rock swallow – found here at the northernmost point of its natural range – along with ravens, squirrels and praying mantises. Careful observers will be rewarded with remarkable nature sightings.

The Partschins Waterfall – a roaring natural spectacle

Another natural marvel is the Partschins Waterfall, which plunges an impressive 97 metres into the valley below. Especially in spring, when meltwater rushes down from the mountains, it displays its full force. The waterfall is easily reached from Algund by a scenic hike – perfect for a half-day adventure.

The Merano High Mountain Trail – experience the full diversity

One of the best ways to explore the Texel Group Nature Park in all its richness is along the famous Merano High Mountain Trail. This 100+ kilometre circular route leads around the entire nature park, offering breathtaking views, authentic alpine huts and deep connections with nature. Algund is the ideal starting point for many stages – easily reached via the nostalgic gondola basket lift to the Leiter Alm hut.
