Our tips for the most beautiful spots in Algund

Enjoying Algund at a relaxed pace

Those vacationing in Algund can enjoy a special kind of freedom: there’s no need to rely on a car. Thanks to the well-developed network of trains, buses, and cable cars, all the highlights of our holiday region are easily, stress-free, and sustainably accessible. With the Vinschgau Railway, the local bus lines around Algund, and the lifts to Aschbach or Vellau, you can move around flexibly and enjoy breathtaking views along the way.

Even better, thanks to the South Tyrol GuestPass Algund (included with your overnight-stay), bus and train travel throughout South Tyrol is free. Making sustainable travel easier than ever. Instead of hunting for parking or getting stuck in traffic, you can relax and enjoy a vacation where the journey itself is part of the experience.

And the best part: many of our most popular destinations are directly accessible by public transport. Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon lets you experience these special places in an even more magical atmosphere

Algund Waalweg canal trail

The Algund Waalweg is a classic walking trail. Almost flat, it follows the historic irrigation canal through vineyards and orchards, always offering stunning views over Merano and the Adige Valley.

  • Our tip: the trail is especially atmospheric in the early morning or evening, when the light is soft and nature is calm.
  • Easy access: Bus line 213 takes you directly to the starting point. The stop to get off is called “Waalweg Algund.” From the village center, you can reach the Waalweg directly via Grabbachweg (entry opposite the cemetery).

Chairlift Vellau

The chairlift in Vellau takes you in just a few minutes to one of South Tyrol’s most stunning panoramic viewpoints. In Vellau, you can enjoy numerous hiking and walking trails.

  • Our tip: if you go in the afternoon, you’ll enjoy clear views and a peaceful atmosphere on the mountain.
  • Easy access: bus lines 213 or 235 take you directly to the "Vellau Chairlift" stop. From the village center, the chairlift can also be reached on foot in about 15 minutes. Follow the road towards the dairy and continue along the main street towards Mitterplars.

Gondola basket lift Leiter Alm hut - Merano High Mountain Trail

A real highlight is the ride on the historic gonfola basket lift in Vellau. In airy baskets, you’ll float gently over forests and meadows up to the mountain station. The ride itself is already an experience with stunning panoramic views. Once at the top, you’re in the heart of a hiking paradise: Leiter Alm hut invites you to a cozy stop, and the famous Merano High Mountain Trail opens up as one of the most beautiful circular trails in the Alps.

  • Our tip: in the afternoon, enjoy the clear views and the especially peaceful atmosphere on the mountain.
  • Easy access: bus line 235 takes you directly to Vellau. From there, it’s just a few steps to the basket lift. Alternatively, you can take the chairlift to Vellau and continue from there with the gonfola basket lift.

Trauttmansdorff throne chairs

Right in the vineyards of Oberplars, you’ll find the large, artistically designed Trauttmansdorff Throne Chairs. They invite you to sit, enjoy the view over Algund and the Merano region, and forget about time for a moment. At the same time, they are a popular photo spot, perfect for a souvenir picture or simply to capture the special atmosphere.

  • Our tip: visiting early in the morning at sunrise is especially impressive, when the sun bathes everything in beautiful light.
  • Easy access: bus lines 213 and 235 conveniently take you to Oberplars. From there, the throne chairs are just a few minutes’ walk away.

Church Maria Schnee

Aschbach is a charming small village above Algund, known especially for its peaceful atmosphere and stunning views. The little church of Maria Schnee is a popular destination for walkers: it is set beautifully in nature and offers a view over the Merano basin, particularly atmospheric at sunrise or in the late afternoon.

  • Our tip: combine your visit with a walk through the surrounding meadows and trails. The Aschbach Forest Adventure Trail is especially relaxing and allows you to enjoy the peace of nature.
  • Easy access: take the Vinschgau Railway from Algund to Rabland. Right next to the station is the valley station of the cable car, which takes you directly to Aschbach. The ride on the Aschbach cable car is free for Algund guests and included in the overnight stay.

Spa town Merano

Just a few minutes from Algund, Merano invites you to a varied day trip. The spa town charms with its historic old town, picturesque arcades, and the promenade along the Passer River. Cafés, boutiques, and small galleries make strolling through Merano a special experience. Stress-free when using public transport.

  • Our tip: early in the morning or later in the afternoon is the best time to enjoy the city at a relaxed pace. You can explore cafés, parks, and squares in peace. On Friday mornings, the Friday market takes place, so the city can be very busy. Plan enough time!
  • Easy access: from Algund, Merano can be reached quickly and comfortably by the Vinschgau Railway or bus lines 213/235. By bike, you can reach Merano in 15 minutes via the Adige cycle path; via Weingartnerstraße it takes about 5 minutes. On foot, Merano can be reached via the Algund Waalweg (approx. 2 hours) or Weingartnerstraße (approx. 25 minutes).
In Algund, lightness and joie de vivre come together in a special way. Every path, whether through the vineyards, along the Waalweg, or up into the mountains, tells a story and with public transport, that story begins even on the way there.

It’s the small moments that stay with you: the sunlight sparkling on the water, the ringing of church bells in the village, the feeling of freedom as your gaze stretches across the valley.
Experiencing Algund at a relaxed pace gives you more than just souvenir photos – you take home a piece of the unique serenity that can be felt everywhere here.
