Algund and its "7 Dwarfs"

Welcome to Algund

Seven districts to explore and enjoy

From spring through to autumn, there’s no stopping hiking enthusiasts here. Thanks to the warm southern breeze, a pleasant climate and breathtaking views, there are countless scenic trails waiting to be discovered.

Whether it’s family-friendly paths, themed trails or the famous Algund Waalweg canal trail, here in Algund you can experience the full beauty of South Tyrol.

Just 2 kilometres from Merano, Algund is perfectly connected to the city – stroll or cycle along the Waalweg or hop on a bus. Especially in the village centre and nearby Merano, you’ll feel the Mediterranean lifestyle in full swing.

A true blend of Alpine grandeur and Mediterranean ease.

Get to know our seven charming districts – each one with its own special character!
Mühlbach
At the heart of it all

Mühlbach

Hardly anyone knows Algund’s village centre by the name Mühlbach, but thanks to its ideal location in the valley, it has long been the local meeting point. Here you’ll find cosy cafés, restaurants, little shops perfect for a stroll – and of course the tourist office, ready with tips for your holiday.
Algund village
The charming village

Algund village

This district sits right on the debris cone of the Grabbach river and offers sweeping views over Merano, the Etschtal valley and as far as Bolzano. One of Algund’s most iconic highlights is the well-known Algund Waalweg canal trail, which runs just above the village centre. In the old part of the village, you can truly feel the picturesque transition from the slopes of the Texel Group to the wide Merano basin. It’s the perfect place to explore South Tyrol’s unique alpine-Mediterranean flora during your nature-filled holiday.
Mitterplars
Between mountain and valley

Mitterplars

This district is situated on the sunny debris cone of the Töllgraben, northwest of Mühlbach. Mitterplars is best known for the valley station of the chairlift, which glides you up to Vellau in just a few minutes. The Algund Waalweg canal trail also runs through here, winding its way through vineyards and orchards all the way to Algund village. Here, you’re just steps away from both the Merano High Mountain Trail and the valley floor – the perfect place between heights and lowlands.
Oberplars
The lodge view

Oberplars

Locals call it Algund’s “front-row seat”: Oberplars, the district perched just above the Algund Waalweg canal trail, boasts stunning views of the spa town Merano and the Adige Valley. Peace and quiet seekers especially love this sun-drenched spot, nestled among orchards and just far enough from the noise of everyday life. Oberplars is, quite literally, kissed by the sun – along with Vellau, it enjoys the longest evening sunlight in all of Algund.
Vellau
The sunny plateau

Vellau

Vellau is Algund’s “panoramic district” – from here, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views over the Adige Valley, the Dolomites to the east and the Ortler Alps to the west. Countless scenic and varied hikes start right here, inviting you to explore the surrounding nature. In summer, lush green meadows and the fresh scent of hay mix with a view that’s truly priceless. An experience to take in with all your senses.
Forst
In the name of beer

Forst

In South Tyrol, Forst is a household name – and not just among beer lovers. This Algund district is home to the Forst specialty brewery, one of the most advanced in all of Europe. Forst marks the southernmost point of Algund and is connected to the village centre via a road bridge and a wooden pedestrian bridge. Towering above it all is Forst Castle – one of many historic castles in the area.
Aschbach
The green power source

Aschbach

The district of Aschbach, located at 1,360 metres above sea level southwest of Algund, is easily accessible via a forest road from Töll or with the modern panoramic cable car from Rabland. Traffic noise is almost unheard of here. Instead, nature takes centre stage – a place to breathe deeply and let your soul unwind. Aschbach is the perfect starting point for scenic alpine hikes and peaceful adventures.
