Vellauer Felsenweg trail and Hans-Frieden-Weg trail
The Felsenweg (Rock Trail) is a well-maintained hiking trail close to the edge of the mountain, a rather easy and flat path but you need to be sure-footed and free from giddiness. Take special care if the ground is slippery - you should avoid the hike in case of snow and ice as well as on hot summer days. After heavy rain there’s also a risk of rockfall!
The Vellauer Felsenweg trail no. 22 starts next to the St. Trinity church in Vellau/Velloi. You first follow a few bends that take you up to the Grabbach stream, where the actual Vellauer Felsenweg trail along the steep mountain flanks of the Mutkamm ridge starts. The trail leads up to the Hochmuth restaurant and is secured with ropes and chains in exposed places (It is very dangerous if the small watercourses are icy.). From the Hochmuth restaurant, the trail leads up to the Steinegg restaurant, from where you continue along the Hans-Frieden-Weg trail (a part of the Meraner Höhenweg high alpine trail no. 24) westwards until the Leiter Alm mountain hut. You can return to Vellau/Velloi by gondola basket lift or on foot along trail no. 25 or trail no. 25A. The Vellauer Felsenweg trail is only recommended for sure-footed hikers who have no head for heights, but caution should also be taken along the Hans-Frieden-Weg trail.
Via the Adige Valley, take the MeBo highway to the Algund exit and follow to Vellau.
Coming from Vinschgau, Algund is right before Merano.
