Felsenweg Vellau
The Vellauer Felsenweg, a trail close to the edge of the mountain, connects Velloi with the Muthöfe farmsteads and offers a fantastic view on the Valle dell’Adige.
The Felsenweg (Rock Trail) is a well-maintained hiking trail close to the edge of the mountain, a rather easy and flat path but you need to be sure-footed and free from giddiness. Take especially care if the ground is slippery - you should avoid the hike in case of snow and ice as well as on hot summer days. After heavy rain there’s the risk of rockfall!
The Vellau Felsenweg (rock path) begins right beside the church of Vellau. It leads through meadows (ascending) to path # 22, passing the Eicherhof on your right hand side. Follow the path through the forest to the Grabbach Valley. After crossing the Grabbach, the path becomes steep and runs along the rock to the Hochmuter (1,361 metres). Even though the path is secured with steel chains on some exposed parts, it is recommended that only people who do not get dizzy take this path. From the Hochmuter, you can ascend on path # 24 to the Steinegger (approx. 100 metres). Once there, turn left and walk on the Meran mountain road to the Leiter Alm ( ¾ hours). Return journey via the basket lift facility or by foot via the Oberplatzer - Kienegger to Vellau (path # 26).
Via the Adige Valley, take the MeBo expressway to the Algund exit and follow to Vellau.
Coming from Vinschgau, Algund is just before Merano.
